Microsoft Ireland shines with Windows 7 Campaign

Irish divisions star in Windows 7 campaign

KARLIN LILLINGTON

THREE EUROPEAN Development Centre divisions of Microsoft Ireland – Biometrics Support, the EDC TV Group, and Mobile Broadband – contributed to features in Windows 7, including biometric support for fingerprint readers, support for European television and mobile applications support.

The unprecedented level of Irish involvement in the development of such a product is the result of the changing face of Microsoft here, from an initial focus on lower-level activities like localisation to high-end projects like software development for Windows, Microsoft’s flagship product.

The European Development Centre has moved from 7 per cent working in core development in 2005 to about 30 per cent today.

“It’s interesting to have Ireland as part of the core development for Windows. That really shows how the technology environment here has changed,” says Microsoft Ireland country manager Paul Rellis.

“What has happened is that, in the last five to six years, we’ve built up our developer expertise and moved out some of our localisation expertise.”

The Dublin R&D centre was announced in 2005 and marked the first large-scale development activity at Microsoft Ireland.

Rellis says that the increased level of product development in Ireland marks Microsoft “as a company growing up and realising a need to be closer to a market, to develop for a global market”.

While most work on Windows 7 was based at the company’s Redmond, Washington, headquarters, many elements went to Microsoft’s international development groups. Of about 1,200 employees at Microsoft’s south Dublin campus, 1,000 were involved with the roll-out of Windows 7. These include employees in the European development centre, the European operations centre and the marketing group.

“For the first time, Windows has native support for biometrics,” says Pieter Kasselman, head of Biometrics Support, EDC. This enables Windows users to log on to their PC, encrypt USB key drives, and access files and applications using the swipe of a finger.

Using Irish-developed features, parents can set up permissions for children on home PCs, businesses can lock down data or key drives, and any computer user can get rid of the need to type in usernames and passwords, Kasselman says. He says Microsoft wanted to incorporate biometrics for any computer user, not just the corporate user, so support is fully integrated into Windows 7.

The TV group, which worked on elements of Vista, the previous version of Windows, began development of the latest television features in Windows 7 as far back as 2005, says Renaud Bordelet, head of the TV group.

“What we’ve delivered on is new ways of watching TV, using Windows Media Centre. We focused on anything, anytime, anywhere.” Windows Media Centre was included in Vista but wasn’t widely used in Europe outside of the UK, because it lacked support for many European TV formats, he says.

The new version can pull in data from many sources to enable a user to get background detail on films and shows, such as actors, year of production, film reviews and ratings.

The media centre application can use analogue, digital, premium TV or satellite sources for TV and lets a computer user record and archive shows to a hard drive, Kasselman says.

So what’s it like to see Irish-built features in Microsoft’s most visible product? “There is nothing quite like seeing your feature in Windows,” says Kasselman.

Getting the product out to vendor outlets is the final piece in the long production timeline of a major operating system release, and Irish employees will push out over a million copies of Windows 7 for the launch this week.

The process goes back over 12 months, with the European operations centre staff working on packaging design and launch logistics with European partners. At the start, only half a dozen Microsoft Ireland employees were involved, but that has swelled to as many as 30 for the launch.

“We’re covering everything from the Nordic countries to South Africa to the Middle East,” says Dave Williams, head of software, manufacturing and planning for the European operations centre. “And all of that will come out of Ireland.”

How to get ahead in Interviewing...

Many people ask us how to put your best foot forward when interviewing for a role in Microsoft.... there are many tricks of this trade, and some of the information that you need may differ depending on the role. However some of the key things to keep in mind are:

  •  You can NEVER prepare enough. So do your research, on the company, and if possible the team and the products.....scour the internet for any titbits that can really highlight your interest in this group/role/company
  • Preparing, should in turn, really help out with your nerves. Try to put aside your concerns, so you can portray yourself in a calm, confident manner. This is a great start to any discussion. However if you are still nervous, don't worry too much about it - a good interviewer will always try to put their candidate at ease
  • Prepare examples of where you have delivered on tasks, assignments and other areas of work, as we typically use competency based interviewing, focussing on your proven track record to date
  • Finally, be yourself. The more comfortable you are, the better a picture the hiring manager can get of your strengths (and weaknesses), making the interview memorable for all the right reasons. Who knows, it may not be the first job you interview for that you get, but another role that arises in the future.........so make that hour count!

Check out the below video clip to see how one of our groups in EDC typically hire for a Sofware Development Engineer (by the way we are looking for one at the moment, so if you are interested you can apply at the following link )

Best of luck!

Final call for Graduate applications...

We were thrilled recently to attend a career event at a local college in Dublin. There has been an increased interest in Graduate roles in Microsoft this year which is great - and even as the tables were being set up there was a buzz in the air as the Computer Science soon-to-be graduates started strolling through the aisles. A handful of our more recent Graduate Hires gave students real life stories of starting their career and how it was going! Their demonstrations on the cool products they work on, relaxed work environment, and career mobility gave potential future hires even more insight in Microsoft as their first possible career move.

Our recruiting team has been busy for the last few months attending career events at colleges accross Europe. In fact, this was the last Graduate event for us before the end of our application deadline of December 5th.....but then that application is just the beginning......following that there is an on-line Technical apptitude test, followed by an assessment centre day and final round interviews here at the Dublin campus. For all who are applying stay tuned here over the coming weeks, for some further tips and tricks on how to navigate that process from some of our recent hires.....

DigiYouthz - They Came, They Saw...

The DigiYouthZ program launched on 12th November with a full-day event for 84 teenage students & 7 teachers from schools across Dublin.
The students saw a selection of technology demos, heard from Microsoft employees with diverse entry points into their own IT careers, did tours of the European Development Centre, participated in Xbox and Movie Maker workshops, and finished the day with an uproarious session in the auditorium. There was terrific energy and fun throughout the day, and as anyone who was at the final session can testify, this is not a shy, retiring generation!

We received great feedback on the whole event, with most popular sessions proving to be the Xbox & Movie Maker workshops where small teams created 3-minute movies for the closing competition. One teacher commented: “What you are doing is excellent. Catch them while they are young, enthusiastic and instil some sort of interest in your profession. Keep up the good work" .  Many participants wrote that they were going home to download programs that they had previously assumed would be too difficult to learn. This is great feedback given that DigiYouthz aims to open students’ minds to the wide array of exciting career opportunities in the IT industry, and specifically to encourage greater take-up of technical degree courses in Ireland.

If you are interested in being involved in future events, please contact digiinfo@microsoft.com

A week in the life of an IW Consultant......

This has been an amazing week for me! Let me tell you why....Over the last year I have worked with one of our clients, a large Telco provider, on a very exciting project aptly dubbed the "New World of Work"! This program is built on a suite of Microsoft technologies which will optimise business productivity and collaboration within  our client's departments while reaching out to their external partners as required. My part - Sharepoint ;0) As an IW Consultant I am responsible for architecting a design that maps the clients requirements into an easy to use, reliable, and cost effective solution. The past year consisted of workshops, meetings, conference calls, a pilot phase, and finally a design that will ultimately improve how the company's employees share information and work together. Changing working practises for the better and saving money along the way ;0)

This week saw the "New World of Work" enter it's final phase and the reason for my AMAZING week. As a consultant my focus tends to be on design and best practises. We are trusted advisors and don't often get the opportunity to deploy what we preach but this week is different! I am deploying the fruits of my labour. An intranet and extranet solution that will promote the sharing and indexing of information via information portals, meeting spaces and document libraries. Did I mention that all of this information will be not only available on users web browsers but mobile phones and home offices too? Oh yes!

Over the next couple of weeks I will be working closely with our clients IT personnel to ensure a smooth and successful deployment. And then...........IW Consultant's have never been in more demand, so I have plenty of challenging, not to mention rewarding work ahead....

Thanks
Aidan

Their goal is to show the magic of software and push technology beyond its limits. So whether they are working with small companies or major clients, they make sure to maximise the clients potential, by getting the best performance from their products.

As Darren, one of the Resource Pracise Managers reveals "We work in partnership with our clients, considering their needs, and how best to address them. We take pride in exceeding on what our clients expect, and really using our expertise to make the technology as effective as possible. This really isn't your average consulting process. Another Great year for Students in Imagine Cup in Paris

Earlier this month, Team Acid Rain from NUI Maynooth won second prize and $10,000 (€6,382) in the Embedded Development category of Imagine Cup in Paris. This is a really great story of 3 students who developed a kit to convert any diesel car to run on any type of vegetable oil. They then hopped into a converted car and drove to Paris to prove their point! Minus one or two minor hiccups (car suspension issue I believe) all arrived safely, and picked up the no 2 spot in the competition, placing in the top 3 of over 3,000 original entries. The talet that these students posess is fantastic - would't it be great to bottle......

Big congratulations to all of the finalists - check out Acid Rain's own Blog following their road to fame ...... and a really nice "snap-video" of their tour below.

Moving country can be so difficult!!!! What Microsoft offers when relocating to Dublin

At Microsoft Ireland we currently hire more than 20% of  our employees from abroad annually, so we have gotten to understand the "pain" that can sometimes be endured when moving country with family and belongings, and setting up in entirely new surroundings. This transition can sometimes be easy, but more often is a challenge that can impact for months once one has moved. Over the last few years we have worked with some friends in the US, to tailor a program that takes the trauma out of moving and ensures a smooth transition to a new country, suburb, shopping centre, school, language and often much more! While each individual is different, and has a different set of needs, we tailor as much as possible to smoothen the road.

Our program offering includes:

  • Obviously your flights to get you and yours to Ireland Airplane
  • rental car if necesssary when you arrive Auto
  • shipping of your household goods
  • pet relocation assistanceCat face
  • short-term accommodation on arrival
  • assistance with visas
  • tax advice Rainbow
  • relocation allowanceMoney

We have also been known to help out with lease assistance, pre-move orientations and cross-cultural training, so always ask to see what can be done for you.....our aim is to make sure the move works for everyone's sake!

If you are reading this from anywhere else in the world, Microsoft Ireland is always an optionSmile

And the winner is...........

A big congratulations to IT Sligo, who were the overall Irish Imagine Cup winning team at last Thursday's competion with their innovative entry: PARK IT. Their system focussed on CO2 emissions. The team comprising of Kieran Stafford, Vladimir Mabhena and Chrisitna Luminea built a real-time parking system that films car parks, sending the data of vacant parking spaces to a central database that is then pushed out via a mobile text/sat-nav to drivers. In essence, it's aim is to reduce the congestion and pollution of cars needlessly driving around looking for somewhere to park. The bottom line on this savvy creation, is that is prevents unnecessary circulation trips, where a driver goes around and around looking for parking (all sounds way too familiarThinking) This system is flexible enough to work anywhere from a car-park to a street or even a field! It can also be used for all types of vehicles eg. boat in a harbour. IT Sligo will soon be bound for France for the finals of the competition, so fingers crossed that they are sucessful all the way.

Also in our other 8 online competitions for Imagine cup 2008, a team from NUI Maynooth Acid Rain are through to the last 200 in round 2 of the embedded development challenge and there are 6 teams (3 from University Ulster Coleraine, 2 from IT Sligo and 1 from Dublin IT) through to the last 100 of the Games development challenge.

Best of luck to all - and congrats to all of the finalists - the entries were truly inspirational, and a great example of the Technical Talent coming through our colleges here.

Irish students proving they have GREAT "Imagination"

Sorry for the blog silence over the last few weeks - but getting back on track now and there are some pretty exciting times here for Microsoft that we just had to write aboutSmile

Currently our Imagine Cup initiative is well under way! Last year was the first year that we hosted the Imagine Cup in Ireland, and our Irish champions from NUI Maynooth travelled to South Korea where they competed against students from all over the world, achieving  6th place overall. This ensured they were included on our global Innovation Accelerator program in Silicon Valley, working to making their Sign-Language software product becomes a reality....truly every young entrepreneur's dream!

The competition is open to Technical students, where in each year it challenges students based on a different theme. This year the very topical challenge is to “imagine a world where technology enables a sustainable environment.”

The final of this year’s Irish Imagine Cup are taking place this week with students from across the country competing for a place in the global finals in France this Summer.....over 520 students registered for the Irish Imagine Cup competition -  a 250% increase on last year. Our top 12 teams have been selected for the software design final representing University Ulster Coleraine, IT Sligo, NUI Maynooth (2 Teams), Dundalk IT, IT Carlow, IADT Dunlaoghaire (2 Teams), IT Tallaght, IT Blanchardstown, Griffith College and Dublin IT.

The submissions are mainly focussed on environmental sustainability and range from ideas on a game to teach children about recycling, through to tracking energy consumption in the home, simulating electricity through wind energy, reviewing regional climate scenarios, real-time parking information to save energy and using online mapping to assist in car-pooling. Our students are using a wide variety of MS technologies to support their solutions from the .NET framework, Visual Studio 2008, Silverlight, ASP.NET, XNA, SQL Server 2008, Windows Server 2008, Windows mobile technology, Live meeting, Virtual Earth, to name a few.

Best of luck to all of the teams, and stay tuned over the next week or so for the results from the Irish Jury!
